Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of a 12-hour fast on the performance of Taekwondo athletes. Methods: The study design was crossover, double blind and randomized, in which 07 black belt Taekwondo athletes (18,2 ± 4,5 years) were submitted to countermovement jump tests (CMJ) and to the multiple series Frequency Speed of Kick Test (FSKTmult) in two experimental conditions: 12-hour fasting condition plus pre-test placebo drink; 12-hour fasting condition plus pre-test liquid meal. Results: The paired student's T-test showed a difference (p <0,05) in the total number of FSKTmult kicks between the placebo condition (257,6 ± 17,1) and liquid meal (343,1 ± 23,4), but there was no difference (p> 0,05) in the CMJ between the placebo situation (36,4 ± 6,5) and liquid meal (36,9 ± 6,9). Conclusion: The 12-hour fasting does not reduce the overall performance, determined by CMJ test results, but it can reduce the specific performance, measured by the total number of kicks, in Taekwondo athletes.
Objetivo: O presente estudo objetivou investigar o efeito do jejum de 12 horas no desempenho de atletas de Taekwondo. Métodos: O desenho do estudo foi cruzado, duplo cego e randomizado, onde atletas faixas pretas de Taekwondo (18,2 ± 4,5 anos) foram submetidos aos testes de altura do salto com contramovimento (SCM) e Frequency Speed of Kick Test múltiplas séries (FSKTmult) em duas condições experimentais: condição jejum de 12 horas mais bebida placebo pré-teste; condição jejum de 12 horas mais refeição líquida pré-teste. Resultados: O teste T de student pareado demonstrou haver diferença (p<0,05) no número total de chutes do FSKTmult entre a condição placebo (257,6 ± 17,1) e refeição líquida (343,1 ± 23,4), mas não apresentou diferença (p>0,05) no SCM entre a condição placebo (36,4 ± 6,5) e refeição líquida (36,9 ± 6,9). Conclusão: O jejum de 12 horas não reduz o desempenho geral, determinado pela altura do SCM, mas pode reduzir o desempenho específico, mensurado pelo número total de chutes, em atletas de Taekwondo.
