Alternate law is a mode of operation for fly-by-wire aircraft systems, which is engaged in emergency situations when there is a problem with the aircraft's sensors or other flight control systems. In this mode, the pilot has more direct control over the aircraft and the flight control system operates with reduced levels of automation and protection. It is a backup mode and is considered less safe than the normal mode of operation.
