Outorga a um indivíduo, do direito de comprar, em uma data futura, ações de uma sociedade por um preço especificado ao tempo em que a opção lhe é conferida, e não ao tempo em que as ações são adquiridas

Meaning

A stock option plan is a right to purchase a corporation's shares within a designated period of time (say, five years) at a set price (say, $ 10 per share, witch is the fair market value at the date the option is granted). When the option price is less than the market value at the time of the option is granted, the immediate financial benefit to the holder of the option is obvious. But when the option price is set at or above the then-market-price (as in the example), the advantage to the holders of the option comes about only if the market price increases during the option period (say, to $ 20 per share), thus enabling them to buy shares at a price below current value.
