A Anemia Falciforme também conhecida como Drepanocitose é uma doença sanguínea hereditária que é caracterizada por uma anomalia no transporte de oxigênio da molécula de hemoglobina em células vermelhas do sangue. Acredita-se que ela é uma má formação das hemácias, elas passam a assumir uma forma semelhante a foices que provoca uma deficiência no transporte de oxigênio e gás carbônico nos indivíduos, ou seja, predomina uma tendência de as células assumirem uma forma rígida anormal, isto em certas circunstâncias. A Anemia Falciforme está associada a diversos problemas de saúde agudos e crônicos, tais como, infeções graves, crise de dores (crise falciforme) e até mesmo pode levar a um acidente vascular cerebral aumentando assim o risco de morte do paciente
