In surgery, "free ties" refer to suture materials, typically threads or ligatures, that are not attached to a needle. These are used to tie off blood vessels or tissues manually to control bleeding or secure tissues during a procedure. Unlike ligatures that come pre-attached to a needle (called "suture ligatures"), free ties are separate and are applied by the surgeon using surgical instruments, such as forceps, to tie knots around blood vessels or other structures.
