Meaning
A "cold shut" in metallurgy is a defect that occurs during the casting process. It happens when two streams of molten metal do not fully fuse together, resulting in a visible line or seam in the final metal product. This defect occurs because the two streams of molten metal are not at a high enough temperature or do not have sufficient fluidity to mix and merge completely. As a result, the metal cools and solidifies before the two streams can bond properly, leaving behind a weak or porous area in the casting. Cold shuts can weaken the overall structure of the metal and may require additional processing or, in some cases, scrapping and recasting of the part to ensure its integrity and quality.
