Kussmaul's respiration is a type of deep, labored breathing that occurs when the body tries to compensate for metabolic acidosis, a condition in which there is an excess of acid in the blood. The respiratory rate increases and the breaths become deeper and more rapid in an attempt to exhale more carbon dioxide and reduce the acidity of the blood.
